A report from SuperData has revealed that the digital sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in its first month has broken world records!
The report, published on April 22nd, revealed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has broken the record for most digital units of a console title sold in one month with a MASSIVE 5 million units, stripping Call of Duty: Black Ops III of this accolade. To put this in perspective, 5 million digital units sold is close to what both Pokemon Sword and Shield and Super Smash Bros Ultimate sold during their first month… combined!
While Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been a highly anticipated game for many people for months (or even years in some cases), this fantastically high number of digital sales can be attributed to closures of physical games stores during the global COVID-19. As a result, more and more gamers are turning to digital outlets to guarantee access to newly released during this challenging time. The cozy and calm nature of the game makes it a perfect choice to dive into during quarantine and having the ability to purchase, download, and start playing all from the comfort of home seems like the obvious choice to make here!
First-month sales figures have also taken New Horizons to the top of the highest-grossing titles in the console category this month as well as making it the best-selling title in the Animal Crossing series ever in the US! Yes, really – just one month after launch! It also marks the third-best launch for any Nintendo game ever, coming in and around 12.45 million units sold.
Congratulations to the Animal Crossing team for these fantastic achievements!
